Wow, I have not been very consistent on my posting lately! My husband and I are working with our church as the facility managers and while we are really enjoying the work (and extremely thankful for it), it is consuming lots of our time lately.
They are in the midst of a major remodel of our youth center, which my husband is leading the work for. So, needless to say, we have been spending a lot of time there.
Some walls were removed and others were added. There was lots of new drywall installed. When we were preparing for the volunteer painters to come in we noticed something awful… a crack in the new drywall. Now, that might not seem like a big deal, but after drywalling for weeks the last thing you want to do is repair it.
I’m not sure if you have ever fixed a crack in drywall before, but here is what I learned watching my husband; you can’t just cover the crack. If you put more drywall mud on to cover the crack, eventually it will crack through.
What you have to do is cut out the entire area of the mud that is cracked to expose the seam. By doing this my husband found that the culprit, was a missing screw underneath. Someone had forgotten to screw the drywall to the screw so it was loose, moved away from the wall and caused the mud to crack. The whole seam needed to be redone.
Watching the whole process got me to thinking: Isn’t that a lot like life? When an area of life starts to crack it is so tempting to just cover it up, make it look pretty, and keep moving. But, if this is the way you try to fix a problem or deal with sin, the crack is going to show through again in the future.
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Luke 6:45
The only way to really resolve a problem area in your life is to go to the root of the problem. Do you deal with anger? Gossip? Jealousy? Lying? Distrust? People Pleasing? Sadness? Worry and anxiety? Fear? They are all heart problems.
To really make a change in yourself or to deal with sin in your life you have to dig deep and find the root of the problem. You can try to cover it, but that will not fix the problem and it will show up in your life again. Lucky for us if we are willing to do the hard work to make the change, God is right there to give us the strength to get through it.
And in the end we will be a beautifully painted wall. (Ok, kind of corny, but I like corny)

It’s always a plus when in the course of your normal life you find a good analogy that helps you understand the gospel better. And of course, share it on your blog.

What a good way to compare dry walling to life! As I was reading your article, I simply admire how detailed you are with words, expressing your thoughts and sharing it to others.
Yes, I agree, dry wall repair is not like patching crack walls by putting drywall mud to cover the crack. Covering the problem and continuing with the flow and not fixing it right will eventually lead to a bigger problem. When fixing, we need to thoroughly inspect and search the cause of the problem to determined how to fix it, just like in life like you said.
By the way, good job to your husband.
